Procedures We Do Not Perform

At Armani Medical, our practice is dedicated exclusively to hair transplantation. Dr. Armani is one of the few board-certified hair restoration surgeons in the United States whose clinic is focused solely on this specialty—without offering ancillary services, cosmetic spa treatments, or product sales. The practice is independent and not part of a larger corporate group, and all procedures are planned, designed, and performed directly by Dr. Armani and his team, without delegation to other physicians.

Dr. Armani often explains to patients that, from a purely technical standpoint, hair can be transplanted from one area of the body to another within the same individual, as long as the follicles establish and maintain an adequate blood supply. However, what is biologically and technically feasible does not necessarily translate into results that appear natural or aesthetically consistent.

Within this focused approach, we take a further step in selectivity by limiting our procedures to the transplantation of scalp hair to the scalp. While various forms of hair transplantation have been described and are performed in many clinics, we believe that differences in hair characteristics between regions of the body can introduce meaningful aesthetic limitations and may lead to results that are less natural, less seamless, and less harmonious.

Dr. Armani typically explains to his patients that it is far more acceptable to have thinning hair—or even be completely bald—than to have results that appear unnatural or draw attention for the wrong reasons. In hair restoration, the objective is not simply to make hair grow, but to ensure that it behaves naturally, blends seamlessly, and remains appropriate for the patient over time.

For this reason, we focus on approaches that offer the highest likelihood of consistent, natural, and aesthetically harmonious results.

Beard Hair Transplantation

Beard transplantation is generally considered in two distinct contexts:

  • transplanting scalp hair into the beard to increase facial density

  • transplanting beard hair into the scalp to address thinning or balding

In both scenarios, the same fundamental limitation applies: hair from different regions of the body is not inherently interchangeable.

Beard hair differs significantly from scalp hair in several important ways. It is typically thicker, coarser, and emerges from the skin at a different angle. It is designed to create facial density and structure, not to replicate the softer, more flexible qualities of scalp hair.

Armani Medical Beard Hair Example

As illustrated in the image above, even without close inspection, the contrast between scalp hair and beard hair is readily apparent. Differences in thickness, texture, curvature, density, and subtle variations in color, tone, and light reflection all contribute to a distinctly different visual appearance.

For many men, this distinction can be appreciated through a simple observation. A single beard hair compared with a scalp hair from the same individual will often reveal clear differences in thickness, texture, curvature, and even subtle variations in color or sheen. When examined closely—both visually and by touch—these differences become immediately apparent.

When hair is moved from one region to another, these characteristics do not change. As a result, mismatches in thickness, texture, and visual behavior can become more noticeable over time. While increased density may be achieved, the way the hair blends, moves, and appears in relation to the surrounding hair may be less natural and less consistent.

For these reasons, and in keeping with Dr. Armani’s commitment to achieving results that are as natural, refined, and close to ideal as possible, we do not perform beard transplantation procedures in our practice.

Eyebrow Transplantation

Many individuals—particularly women—experience thinning of the eyebrows due to genetic factors, over-plucking, or other causes. As a result, some seek solutions to restore density or reshape the brows, including the transplantation of scalp hair into the eyebrow region.

While this procedure is technically feasible, the fundamental limitation remains the same: hair from different regions of the body is not inherently interchangeable.

Eyebrow hair has very specific characteristics. It is typically finer in caliber, grows to a limited length, tapers naturally toward the end, and lies flat against the skin in a highly organized directional pattern. These features are essential to achieving a soft, natural, and balanced appearance.

For many patients, these differences can be appreciated through a simple observation. An eyebrow hair compared with a scalp hair from the same individual will often reveal clear differences in thickness, length, tapering, and overall texture—even without magnification. When examined closely or felt between the fingers, these distinctions become immediately apparent.

Scalp hair, by contrast, continues to grow, often has a different thickness and curvature, and does not naturally taper in the same way once cut. When transplanted into the eyebrow region, these characteristics do not change.

As a result, scalp hair placed into the eyebrows must be trimmed regularly. Because it continues to grow and is cut repeatedly, it often develops a blunt end rather than the fine, tapered tip seen in natural eyebrow hair. Over time, this can contribute to an appearance that is less soft and less natural.

In addition, the eyebrow is a highly visible and structurally delicate area. Even minor inconsistencies in angle, direction, or hair behavior can affect the overall appearance.

In select cases, efforts may be made to better approximate eyebrow hair characteristics by utilizing finer or partially miniaturized hairs. One approach involves treating a small, concealed donor area of the scalp with controlled applications of laser energy—similar to technologies used in permanent hair reduction—to intentionally reduce the caliber of the hair over time. These finer hairs may then be used for transplantation.

While this concept may improve certain aspects of compatibility, the miniaturization process itself is time-intensive and typically requires multiple treatment sessions prior to any transplantation. Even with these additional measures, outcomes remain variable and not fully predictable.

For these reasons, and in keeping with Dr. Armani’s commitment to achieving results that are as natural, refined, and close to ideal as possible, we do not perform eyebrow transplantation procedures in our practice.

Body Hair Transplantation

Body hair transplantation is most commonly discussed by male patients—particularly those who have a significant amount of hair on the chest, arms, or other areas and are seeking additional donor supply to address thinning or balding of the scalp.

While this concept may seem logical at first, the same fundamental limitation applies: hair from different regions of the body is not inherently interchangeable.

Body hair differs from scalp hair in many important ways. It typically grows at a slower rate, reaches a shorter maximum length, and often has a different texture, thickness, and curvature. These differences can vary significantly even within the same individual, depending on the area of the body.

For many men, these differences can be appreciated through a simple observation. A hair taken from the arm, chest, or other body area compared with a scalp hair from the same individual will often reveal clear differences in thickness, length, curvature, and overall behavior. Even without magnification, these distinctions can be both seen and felt.

When body hair is transplanted into the scalp, these characteristics do not change. As a result, variations in growth rate, length, texture, and curl can make it difficult to achieve a uniform and natural appearance. Over time, these differences may become even more noticeable as the surrounding scalp hair continues to grow and behave differently.

In rare and highly selected cases—typically in corrective situations or when scalp donor supply has been significantly limited—body hair may be considered as a supplemental or filler source. However, it is not generally suitable as a primary solution because of its variability and limited predictability.

For these reasons, and in keeping with Dr. Armani’s commitment to achieving results that are as natural, refined, and close to ideal as possible, we do not perform body hair transplantation procedures in our practice.

Why Do Many Hair Transplant Clinics Offer These Procedures?

After reviewing this information, it is natural to ask why many clinics offer procedures such as beard transplantation, eyebrow transplantation, or the use of body hair for scalp restoration.

The answer is multifactorial. These procedures are technically feasible and, in some cases, may produce visible improvements in density or coverage. In certain situations—particularly in corrective cases or when scalp donor supply has been significantly limited—they may be considered as part of a broader treatment strategy.

At the same time, different clinics may have different philosophies, priorities, and thresholds for what they consider an acceptable outcome. Some practices may choose to offer a broader range of procedures, including those with greater variability in overall appearance and consistency. In some cases, expanding the range of services offered may also be influenced not only by clinical judgment, but also by business considerations.

At Armani Medical, our approach is intentionally more selective. Dr. Armani’s emphasis on precision and his insistence on results that are seamless, harmonious, and natural guide every aspect of treatment planning, and often preclude procedures in which these standards cannot be reliably achieved.

For patients who are actively considering these types of procedures, it is important that both the potential benefits and the limitations are discussed in detail. When fully informed, patients are better able to make decisions that align with their expectations and long-term goals.
