Hair transplantation is generally a safe procedure when performed by an experienced, qualified physician; however, as with any surgical procedure, it does carry potential risks. Possible complications include infection, excessive bleeding, poor wound healing, poor scarring, temporary or permanent shock loss, unnatural hair growth patterns, temporary or prolonged numbness or altered sensation, and dissatisfaction with cosmetic outcomes.
At Armani Medical, we place extraordinary emphasis on minimizing risk by being meticulous and proactive before, during, and after every procedure. In nearly 20 years of performing hair transplantation on a full-time basis, we have encountered only two minor infections, both involving the donor area. These were easily resolved with a short course of oral antibiotics and were most likely related to patients not fully adhering to post-operative donor-area care instructions. We have also encountered a single donor-area hematoma several years ago in a patient who piloted an unpressurized small aircraft shortly after surgery, where changes in cabin pressure were felt to be a contributing factor.
It is important to understand that true complications are not synonymous with less-than-ideal results. A complication refers to an unexpected medical event, whereas variations in hair growth, density, healing, and scarring among patients are expected and normal, even when the same techniques, graft numbers, and surgical standards are used. Individual biological factors—such as healing response, scalp characteristics, blood supply, and genetics—play a significant role in outcomes and cannot be fully predicted or controlled by the physician or surgical team.
