Can Shampooing or Washing Your Hair Too Often Cause Hair Loss?

No. Under normal circumstances, shampooing or washing your hair too often does not cause permanent hair loss or male or female pattern baldness.

Many people notice hairs in the shower or collected in the shower drain after washing their hair and naturally assume that shampooing is causing the hair to fall out. In reality, shampooing is usually only removing hairs that have already completed their normal growth cycle and were going to shed regardless.

Each hair follicle continuously cycles through phases of growth, transition, rest, and shedding. As part of this normal process, the average healthy person sheds approximately 50 to 100 hairs each day. This daily shedding is a normal part of the hair cycle and should not be confused with permanent hair loss.

Not all of this normal shedding occurs in the shower, but many people notice it there because the gentle massaging action of shampooing and the force of the rinsing water help dislodge hairs that have already completed their normal growth cycle. These hairs were already destined to shed regardless of whether you washed your hair that day.

The remainder of the normal daily shedding often goes unnoticed. Hairs are routinely lost while brushing or combing, styling, touching the hair throughout the day, sleeping, getting dressed, walking, or simply going about normal daily activities. Because these hairs are shed gradually and in different locations, they are much less noticeable than the hairs that collect in the shower drain.

For this reason, seeing hair in the shower should not be interpreted as evidence that shampooing or washing your hair is causing hair loss.

Although shampooing itself does not cause permanent hair loss, there are a few situations in which washing your hair may contribute to temporary problems.

Some shampoos or ingredients to which an individual is sensitive may cause scalp irritation, dryness, or inflammation. Likewise, vigorously scratching the scalp with the fingernails or aggressively rubbing the hair while shampooing may lead to hair breakage or temporary irritation. However, these situations affect the hair shaft or scalp rather than permanently damaging healthy hair follicles.

If you notice persistent or progressive hair shedding over time, the underlying cause is far more likely to be hereditary hair loss, a temporary increase in shedding following physical or emotional stress, hormonal changes, certain medications, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid disorders, or another underlying medical condition than shampooing or washing your hair too often.

Can a Shampoo Cause or Reduce Hair Loss?

In most cases, no. The vast majority of shampoos neither cause permanent hair loss nor significantly reduce hereditary male or female pattern hair loss.

Although some people wonder whether a new shampoo caused their hair loss, this is unlikely. Male and female pattern hair loss develops gradually over time and is primarily driven by genetics and hormones rather than by the shampoo being used. Because the hair growth cycle occurs over several months, it is unlikely that changing shampoos would suddenly trigger permanent hair loss within a matter of days or weeks.

Likewise, many shampoos are marketed as reducing hair loss or stimulating hair growth. While some may improve scalp health, reduce dandruff, decrease excess oil, or make the hair appear fuller and healthier, shampoos alone should not be expected to prevent, stop, or reverse hereditary hair loss. Male and female pattern hair loss are primarily genetic and hormonal conditions, and ordinary shampoos do not alter those underlying processes.

Dr. Armani generally recommends using a high-quality, gentle shampoo that is appropriate for your hair and scalp type while avoiding products that unnecessarily irritate the scalp. When it comes to selecting the ideal shampoo and conditioner for your hair type, scalp characteristics, and styling routine, your hairstylist may actually be better equipped than your hair transplant surgeon to make specific product recommendations. Maintaining a healthy scalp provides the best environment for normal, healthy hair growth. However, simply using a more expensive or higher-quality shampoo is unlikely to significantly reduce hereditary hair loss, and using an inexpensive shampoo is not likely to cause permanent hair loss in an otherwise healthy scalp.

There are exceptions. Some individuals may develop scalp irritation or an allergic reaction to a particular shampoo or one of its ingredients. If significant inflammation develops, temporary increased hair shedding or hair breakage may occur because of scalp irritation or inflammation rather than permanent damage to the hair follicles themselves. Fortunately, once the offending shampoo is discontinued and the scalp returns to normal, the hair typically recovers.
